Our Business

Realizing the Stable Supply of Coal and Biomass Fuels
While Valuing Our Customer Base, We Strive to Solve Challenges

MS Enerucia was established in 1996 as a spin-off from the coal division of Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Initially, the company began as a joint venture between Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Chichibu Onoda Co., Ltd. (now Pacific Cement Co., Ltd.). Later, Sumitomo Corporation joined the venture, and today, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. holds a 51% stake, Sumitomo Corporation holds 30%, and Pacific Cement Co., Ltd. holds 19%. We have grown into a trading company specializing in coal and biomass fuels, boasting a history of nearly 30 years, supported by our customers in various industries.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the import of Russian coal, a nearby source, was halted. In response to this, we worked to develop new alternative sources to meet the demand for stable supply, while also establishing a logistics system for small-lot deliveries that had not been seen before. In addition, since 2014, we have been supplying biomass fuels and, in line with the global trend toward decarbonization, we are committed to supplying resources that can replace coal. Our essence is not just limited to the procurement and sale of goods. We believe that it is essential to provide energy resources suited to the times, based on our deep understanding of customers, resources, and logistics.

While ensuring the stable supply of coal and biomass fuels, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to solving our customers' challenges, supported by our strong customer base.

Coal Procurement and Sales

We supply coal steadily to customers in industries such as cement, paper, chemicals, and independent power generation (excluding steel companies and electric utilities) primarily within Japan. One of our key strengths lies in leveraging the trust and extensive networks of our major shareholders, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation. This allows us to source coal consistently from various regions, including Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, and Colombia.
We are also actively engaged in exploring new coal sources, including providing information about producer countries, conducting mine development research, and negotiating with suppliers. While we anticipate a long-term decline in coal demand due to decarbonization efforts, we foresee an increase in demand for biomass fuels. We will continue to maintain the trust we have built with our customers and contribute to solving their challenges in the future.

Coal Flow

We have built a coal supply chain that delivers coal from mines to our customers’ designated locations, offering comprehensive solutions. Specifically, we arrange maritime transportation, enter into charter contracts, handle import customs procedures, manage cargo handling at unloading ports, oversee coal storage at domestic coal relay bases, arrange domestic truck and coastal vessel transport, and manage various procedures and payment processes. Through these operations, we contribute to our customers’ businesses by leveraging expertise in operations, finance, and legal matters.

    Mines

Coal mining methods include open-pit mining and underground mining. The majority of the general coal we handle is sourced from open-pit mining.

  • Transportation

    Transportation

From the mines to the loading port, coal is transported using methods such as rail, barges, or trucks, depending on the regional characteristics and economic factors.

  • Loading Port

    Loading Port

Once the coal reaches the port, it is loaded onto ships by port companies. In some regions, cargo may be transferred via barges for offshore loading.

  • Maritime Transport

    Maritime Transport

Depending on customer requirements, we transport coal in bulk carriers ranging from thousands to tens of thousands of tons.

  • Port (Unloading)

    Port(Unloading)

Coal is delivered directly to customers' factories or routed through relay bases, where inventory management, coastal vessel transshipment, and other processes are handled.

Our customers use coal for in-house power generation or cement production. After delivery, we pay close attention to quality control, ensuring there are no contaminants and monitoring combustion performance. We maintain communication with producers based on customer feedback to continuously improve our services.

Biomass Fuel Procurement and Sales

To achieve the government’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal, we propose long-term, stable supplies of biomass fuels and new materials.
We procure Green Gold Label (GGL) certified palm kernel shells (PKS) from Indonesia and Malaysia under Japan's FIT system and contribute to the stable supply of biomass power plants in Japan. In addition, we handle newly approved materials under the FIT system, such as cashew nut shells, pistachio shells, and emerging products like black pellets and tire chips, all while contributing to GHG reduction efforts.
We also acquire various forest certifications for wood-based materials and handle the procurement and sales of wood pellets.
